The legendary cellist, Pablo Casals was asked why he continued to practice at age 90. His reply: “Because I think I’m making progress.” Wayne Dyer said, “Don’t die with your music still inside you.”
I am in awe of the simple musical metaphors from these two men, each teaching a little different stance, yet not. I appreciate stories where people follow their passions and dreams, despite limitations or age. I believe that whatever our interest or level of expertise, we can only get better with practice. Even if we don’t have a natural capacity towards something we enjoy, practice will only assist us to get better.
We all do have a natural capacity towards something that the world will benefit from. It is a shame if we don’t fully take this on and it stays hidden inside us, like an unplayed song.
May we all choose to continue to play our music to our own rhythmic song, pursue getting better at whatever we enjoy and have to share with the world and not let age ever get in the way!
